Deadhead regularly

This really works and helps to extend the flowering season. Of course, real the purpose of flowers is to enable plants to reproduce, and we merely enjoy the side-benefit from these colourful blooms. However, as flowers begin to fade, the plant’s energy is diverted towards producing seeds rather than producing more flowers. So, by picking off the flowers as they fade – or ‘deadheading’ – it will keep the plant flowering, so you can have colourful blooms right through to the first frosts. This is one of my favourite gardening jobs, so can be easily included in one of my scheduled visits to your garden.
