Apply annual mulch

It helps suppress weeds, retain water and nourish your soil. It even makes the borders look neat and tidy too. Applying at least 5cm of well-rotted organic matter to borders in the early spring will help lock moisture into the soil, blocking out the sun and drying winds. It creates a physical barrier to suppress weeds and also contains nutrients, which are slowly released into the soil to nourish your plants. As well as boosting fertility, organic mulches also help to improve soil structure, making sandy soils more moisture-retentive, and helping clay soils to become more free draining. Again, this is a job I can do for you on a  scheduled garden visit.
